John Green filmed a cameo appearance, but his scene was cut from the film. However, it will appear in the deleted scenes.[5]

Production[edit]

Filming began on August 26, 2013 in PittsburghPennsylvania,[6] where production took place until October 10, 2013. The historic "Mansions on Fifth" hotel was featured in the film.[7] Filming in Amsterdam began on October 14, before officially wrapping up on October 16, 2013.[8]
The film was scored by Bright Eyes.[9]

Marketing[edit]

The first trailer for the film was released January 29, 2014. The trailer had over 3 million views in less than 24 hours after its release.[10] A video clip was revealed in a pre-show at the 2014 MTV Movie Awards on April 13, 2014.[11] An extended trailer was released on the 28th April, 2014. More clips have been released via YouTube as a promo for the film's release.

Critical response[edit]

The Fault in Our Stars has received positive reviews from critics. It obtained a "Certified Fresh" seal from Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and gives the film an 83% approval rating from critics, with an average score of 6.9/10, based on 126 reviews. The site's consensus states: "Wise, funny, and heartbreaking without resorting to exploitation, The Fault in Our Stars does right by its bestselling source material".[12] Metacritic gives the film a score of 69 out of 100 based on reviews from 41 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[13] CinemaScore gave the film an "A" rating on an A+ to F scale.[14]
Matthew Pejkovic of Matt's Movie Reviews wrote that, "while The Fault in Our Stars can be overbearingly schlocky at times, it is also an emotionally heartfelt film, especially in regards to the central romance that is sure to make the target audience swoon".[15] Quickflix's Simon Miraudo gave the film a 3/5 rating say that, "The Fault in Our Starsundeniably sets us up to knock us down".[16] Liam Maguren at Flicks.co.nz said it was, "one of the most valuable young adult films Hollywood has produced in the last decade".[17]Richard Roeper of Chicago Sun-Times gave the film 4 stars and gave praise to Woodley's performance saying it was pure and authentic; he writes that, "The Fault in Our Stars: A lovely work led by the transcendent Shailene Woodley", and even believed that her performance as Hazel was Oscar-worthy, stating that, "she's that memorable".[18]
Peter Travers of Rolling Stone called the film a, "fresh, lively love story, brimming with humor and heartbreak" and also praised Woodley's performance calling her a, "sublime actress with a résumé that pretty much proves she's incapable of making a false move on camera".[19] Time magazine's Richard Corliss wrote that, "Hazel and Augustus will live in film lore because of the young actors who play them".[20] Chris Vongar of Dallas Morning News gave the film a B+ saying that, "the movie is witty and alive and only very occasionally maudlin".[21] USA Today's Claudia Puig said, "the movie is well-written, well-acted, acerbic, funny and wisely observed" giving it a 3.5/4 rating.[22] Chris Nashawaty ofEntertainment Weekly called the film a, "funny, sweet, three-hankie tearjerker".[23]

Box office[edit]

The Fault in Our Stars has earned $48,002,523 in North America as of June 8, 2014, and an estimated $17,092,000 in other countries, for a worldwide total of $65,094,523.[3]
In North America, The Fault in Our Stars earned $8.2 million in Thursday night showings, surpassing March's Divergent ($4.9 million), and is about on par with recent comic book adaptations of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ($8.7 million) and X-Men: Days of Future Past ($8.1 million). It mainly received its boost from "The Night Before Our Stars", a premium-priced event with tickets running as high as $25, which includes a showing of the movie and a simulcast Q&A with cast and crew including Shailene WoodleyAnsel ElgortNat Wolff, and author John Green.[24] On the opening day of its wide release, the film earned $26.1 million beating Tom Cruise's Edge of Tomorrow which opened with just $10.7 million. It was ahead of Maleficent ($24.3 million) and its fellow Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort's Divergent ($22.8 million).[25]

The full track list was released on April 13, 2014, and was arranged by Nate Walcott and Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes. It includes few high-profile artists likeKodalineBirdy and Ed Sheeran, who wrote the song for the end credits ("All of the Stars").[26]
The soundtrack was released in North America on May 19, 2014, and is due for release in early June in the UK.
The lead single from the soundtrack is Charli XCX's contribution "Boom Clap", which debuted on April 11, 2014, and the music video for which premiered June 2.[27][28] A music video for Ed Sheeran's "All of the Stars" was released May 9, 2014.[29]
